All Girls Can Be Smart-Girls!
Here are just some of the reasons that make Smart-Girl the right program at the right time:
- The explosive neurological growth and physical changes that happen during the "tween" period are comparable only to the growth immediately following infancy.
- Girls today, across all races, cultures and regions say they are forced to grow up too fast as they face concerns of drugs, violence, sex and pregnancy.
- Sex, peer pressure and body image top the list of girls ' concerns. Girls say neither schools nor parents provide the help they need with these issues.
- Girls are twice as likely to suffer depression as boys by ages 14-15.
- The average model is 5'10" and weighs 110 pounds, whereas the average women is 5'4" and weighs 142 pounds. This is the largest discrepancy that has ever existed between women and the cultural ideal. (Eating Disorder Referral and Information Center 2007)
- In the United States approximately 10% of girls and women (numbering up to 10 million) are suffering from diagnosed eating disorders. Of these, at least 50,000 will die as a direct result. (Eating Disorder Referral and Information Center 2007)
- 25% of sexually active adolescent girls age 15-17 report engaging in oral sex to avoid intercourse.
- Eighty percent of girls report experiencing sexual harassment.
- During middle school, girls' career aspirations sharply decline, while boys' aspirations increase.
- During middle school, girls experience a dramatic loss of self-confidence, especially in their ability to understand math and science. Their self-confidence never again returns to that expressed
by males.
